Journal of our Tour: Migration in the Strait – Doñana.

Day 1.
Airport pickup and transfer to hotel in Tarifa.

Dinner and overnight in Tarifa.

Day 2.
Departure at dawn to visit the natural setting Lances Beach, located on the western side of the Strait is presented as a very interesting place for bird watching, here and Vega Jara confluence of the rivers with the ocean, mixing water sweet with salty, sandy silts and clays with a variety of vegetation.

It is a good place for observing migration, highlighting the presence of large numbers of waders and gulls; and as most emblematic species: Audouin’s Gull.

We will take a picnic at one of the observatories in the Strait.

We will along all afternoon a tour of different observatories to observe the migration and depending on the prevailing wind, we will choose one or the other side of the strait to make our observations. Among the most representative species include large concentrations of Black Kites, Short toed Eagles, Black Storks, Honey buzzard, Vultures, Golden Eagle, among others.

Day 3.

Departure at dawn to visit various observatories throughout the morning as the evening before choose the most appropriate depending on the prevailing wind in the area.

We will take the picnic at the observatory last visit to head after the Natural Park of Los Alconocales.

This Natural Park has the largest area of cork oak forest in Europe, as well as finding other ecosystems quejigares, palmitares, wild olive, pine, riverside forests, scrub and grassland. It is a good area for observing birds of prey as well as typical river birds and low scrub forests.

Day 4.

Departure at dawn to visit La Janda, which was the most important wetland in the Iberian Peninsula. After suffering major canalization and drying to transform their land into cultivation areas, we are still presented as one of the most emblematic places regarding bird watching is concerned, highlighting important flocks of Cranes, Collared Pratincole, Montagu’s Harriers , Squacco Heron, Glossy Ibis, etc .; besides being home range of the Imperial Eagle and because of the proximity to the Strait area step in the migration of thousands of birds.

From here we will go to the Laguna de Medina where we will taste our picnic and make a tour around the wetland where we can see how most interesting to the White-headed Duck species, the Ferruginous Duck, the Crested Coot, the Purple gallinule, teals, the Black necked Grebe, etc.

By mid-afternoon we head to the Natural Park of Brazo del Este (Doñana), located on the left bank of the Guadalquivir is one of the two major branches of the river at its confluence with the marshes.

Today this enclave is surrounded by rice fields and is one of the best places to watch birds in Doñana. At this time of year we will see significant concentrations of waders, ducks, herons, marsh birds; some as interesting as Spoonbills, glossy ibis, Marsh harriers, herons, Great White egrets, Spanish Sparrow, Penduline Tit, etc.

Late in the afternoon we visit the islet of Los Olivillos, old layout of the Guadalquivir river after the transformations to adapt to large vessels coming up to Seville, he stayed as a large reservoir surrounded by beaches where we can see many of the waterfowl, waders and herons Doñana, highlighting among others the teals, the White Headed Duck, the Black-necked grebe and Squacco.

Day 5.

Departure at dawn to visit a pasture with first Mediterranean forest where you can observe some very interesting passerines such as the Sardinian warbler, Dartford warbler, Subalpine warbler, Hoopoe and some birds of prey like the Red kite, the Booted eagle or Black Shouldered Kite.

By midmorning we visit the reserve Dehesa de Abajo. A large farm where different ecosystems such as pine, wild olive groves, scrubland and a wetland of some 300 hectares are mixed. in which quotations multitude of waterfowl as Glosy Ibis, Flamingos, Spoonbills, Red Crested Pochards, Grebes, Godwits, Black Tailed Godwit, Greenshanks, Greylag Geese, Avocets, Stilts, Coots, White headed Duck, Crested Coot, Osprey, given etc. .

Here we will take the picnic, then cross the Green Corridor, now and after the restoration work carried out after the ecological disaster suffered in 1998, is one of the best ecological corridors in Europe, connecting Sierra Morena with Doñana.
In this enclave we will find large flocks of Greylag Geese, Cranes, Black Storks groups, Bittern, Great Egrets, as most representative.

By midafternoon we will cross a wide area of natural salt marsh on the northern edge of the National Park. We will make several stops in observation areas such as Lucio del Lobo Visitor Center Jose Antonio Valverde and Caño Guadiamar where we’ll Glosy Ibis, Avocets, Great White Egrets, Night Herons, Squacco Herons, Crested Coot ,Penduline Tit, Grasshopper warbler, as most representative species .

Day 6.

Out before dawn to go to the village of El Rocio, where we picked up some off-road vehicles for the northern route of the Donana National Park. This route also pass through two of the most important ecosystems of Doñana: marsh, the banks and the Mediterranean forest. On this tour we will observe species such as Spanish Imperial Eagle, Booted Eagle, Kite, Glosy Ibis, Spoonbill, Sandgrouse, Little Bittern, Martinete, Tree sparrow, Sparrow, Penduline Tit, Gallinule, Red Crest Pochard, Wigeon, Common Teal, etc.

After making this tour will visit the Visitor Center of Rocina, where we stop for a picnic.

In the afternoon a transect walk two hours and a half along the Arroyo de La Rocina, one of the main water of the marsh. It is a path in which there are several hides overlooking the riverbed and shaped in turn by a gallery forest very well preserved. Here we can see many passerines with riparian vegetation, in addition to ducks and herons.

Transfer to the airport.

DAY 7: Aznalcazar – Sevilla Airport.
